APRA has warned trustees to treat AI as a material risk management issue rather than a side project for innovation teams, sharpening the focus on how super funds deploy automated systems across member servicing, administration, investment operations and internal decision-making. For a sector managing trillions of dollars in retirement savings, the message is straightforward: new technology does not dilute fiduciary duty.
The warning matters because super funds are under pressure to cut costs, lift service standards and modernise creaking back-office systems. AI promises gains on all three fronts. But APRA is signalling that speed to adoption will count for little if boards cannot explain how models are governed, monitored and challenged.
Boards Being Told to Own the Risk
The regulator’s position pushes accountability back to the top of the organisation. Trustees are expected to understand where AI is being used, what decisions it influences and how any errors, bias, security gaps or operational failures would be identified and contained.

What Trustees Will Need to Show
Funds experimenting with AI will increasingly need to demonstrate that use cases are mapped, approved and regularly reviewed. That includes understanding training data, documenting limitations, setting thresholds for human intervention and making sure staff are not relying on outputs they do not properly understand.
In practice, trustees are likely to face tougher internal questions about whether AI tools are being used only for low-risk administrative support or whether they are edging into decisions with direct member or investment consequences. The deeper the use, the stronger the expectation for controls.
